What Does a Technical Lead Actually Do?
The real job of a technical lead — architecture decisions, team guidance, delivery ownership, and the results companies hire them for.
Short answer: a technical lead owns the technical success of a product — making architecture decisions, guiding developers, and ensuring the team ships reliable, maintainable software on time.
The four core responsibilities
- Architecture — choosing the right structure (microservices, event-driven, etc.) so the system can grow without breaking.
- Delivery — turning requirements into a plan, breaking work into shippable pieces, and unblocking the team.
- Quality & reliability — code reviews, testing, CI/CD, security, and keeping production stable.
- People — mentoring developers, setting standards, and being the bridge between business and engineering.
When a company needs a technical lead
- A platform is growing and the current architecture can't keep up.
- The team ships features but struggles with reliability or cost.
- A project keeps missing deadlines because scope and architecture aren't managed.
What to look for when hiring one
Real evidence of scale — systems that handled large user bases, meaningful cost or performance wins, and a track record of shipping end to end.
That's exactly what I do: I've led platform evolution with 100+ microservices, supported 1M+ active users, and cut cloud costs by 90%. Read about my work, check my CV, or get in touch if you're hiring a Technical Lead.
