How to Choose a Freelance Developer or Technical Lead
The checklist business owners should use before hiring a freelance developer or technical lead — and the red flags that signal risk.
Short answer: hire someone who has shipped end-to-end products (not just code), communicates clearly about scope and price, and shows real results you can verify.
The checklist
- Verify shipped products — ask for live links and case studies, not just screenshots.
- Check end-to-end ability — can they design, build, deploy, and maintain? Fragmented teams create handoff problems.
- Demand clear scoping — a fixed quote with defined deliverables beats open-ended hourly billing.
- Assess security awareness — ask what they do about backups, encryption, and attacks.
- Test communication — a slow or vague responder is a red flag before you pay.
Red flags
- No verifiable portfolio or live products.
- Quotes that feel too good to be true (they usually are).
- No mention of security, backups, or maintenance.
- Unwilling to take responsibility for the full lifecycle.
Why experience matters
A technical lead brings architecture judgment that saves you money over time — cheaper to build, cheaper to run, and fewer surprises. That's the difference between "someone who writes code" and "someone who delivers a business result."
